Thank you Dr. Mike Manno!

Dr. Katie Flynn presenting Dr. Manno with a certificate of appreciation from the State of California.

After receiving the good news on Valentine’s Day from Dr. Mike Manno that the EHV-1 quarantine was finally lifted, the desert polo community is breathing much easier this week. Polo games have resumed, the players are playing and the storm clouds have lifted. While the entire polo community participated in the quarantine and helped monitor [...]

Final Update – Quarantine is Over

vet_logo

Release the hounds!!!  The final test results came back negative and the State Animal Health Department is releasing the EHV-1 quarantine.  Let’s play polo. It was real and it was fun.  But it was not real fun.  But it is over. Michael Manno, DVM, MS

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 14, 2012

Hold your horses….literally.  Someone moved the finish line down the track a bit.  We are awaiting test results on one more horse that had a high fever with swollen legs and had practiced on Sunday.  Since the clinical signs were those that could be seen with EHV-1 and there had been contact with other horses, [...]

EHV-1 Update – Quarantine Extended at least 2 days

vet_logo

The quarantine was scheduled to be lifted today, but we just received news at 10:30 this morning, that a horse residing at one of the private stabling areas near the corner of Madison and Ave. 50 (Fish Creek Barns) has a 103 fever and swollen back legs.  Dr. Manno is waiting for test results to [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 10. 2012

Well, another day another horse tested…actually two.  We had 1 horse off property that had hind end lameness and some urinary issues and was tested strictly out of completeness.  It came back negative.  Another horse today at the club came up with a rising fever and limb edema.  We had the samples driven to Ontario [...]

We are still looking good.  Practices start this weekend.  Almost there.  Remember, there is still no in or out with horses from the polo complex until notified.

No news is great news.  Stick and ball opened without a hitch and we seem to be on track.  Let’s keep it up.  5 days and counting. Michael Manno, DVM, MS

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 7, 2012

Well, we have just entered the long, dark tunnel.  It is hard to make out any light at the end, but it has to be there.  The last horse just left isolation and tested negative.  The State Animal Health Department has allowed increased activity in the quarantine zone.  We are making progress people. It is [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 6, 2012

Pretty quiet today.  The 1 horse in isolation slowly returned to a normal temperature this afternoon without treatment.  Tests results will be available late Tuesday afternoon.  Hopefully, this will be our last case.  After tomorrow both time and science should start to be on our side. If we get good news, stick and ball should [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 5, 2012

Well, just like the New England Patriots, we got so close only to have a last second setback.  A new horse from the Empire West stabling area came up with a temperature over 103 today.  It was immediately moved to the isolation stalls and will have samples taken first thing Monday morning.  This will probably [...]

Daily Update – February 4, 2012

OK class, listen up!  Today the horses behaved very, very well – it was the human element we had some trouble with.  So in case you lost your homework assignment, or the dog ate it or you dropped in from another planet – WE ARE STILL UNDER  QUARANTINE.  The only thing that has changed since [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 3, 2012

Still on track – the 1 horse isolated on the Gehache quarantine zone came back negative on both tests.  It has not had a fever for 2 days.  The other horse we have been observing also has a normal temperature all day.  We have no other horses in isolation. Let’s keep to the routine.  We [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 2, 2012

vet_logo

A relatively quiet day…sort of.  There are no horses in the designated isolation area for the first time in a week, but 2 other horses are under observation within their respective quarantine zones.  A horse in the Gehache zone had a reported fever of 102 late last night.  This stabling area has not had any [...]

Daily EHV-1 Update – February 1. 2012

More good news.  The single horse in quarantine tested negative for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1.  It did test positive for the respiratory form and is still suffering flu-like symptoms and continues to be treated as such.  There will be no change to the quarantine schedule though since only the neuropathogenic strain is considered. One [...]
